Sample Cirriculum

Here are some of the activities that are provided in pre-school settings that promote children's learning and development. The materials, activities and interactions in the pre-school provide opportunities for children to learn and form the basis for the pre-school play curriculum.

 

Resources Used in Stepping Stones Curriculum:

Sand, Water, play Dough, Clay, Paint Drawing Art/Junk Materials, Construction Blocks, Table Top Toys, Floor Toys. Books- Stories & Rhymes, Music & Movement, Investigation & Exploration, Nature/Interest Area, Imaginative Play/ Home Corner/Role Play, Emergent Writing, Interaction with Children/Adult, Physical/Energetic Play. The curriculum plans reflects the use of Aistear, Siolta (standards 6 play and standard 7 curriculum) and the childcare regulations 2006 in particular regulation 5 which incompasses the health, welfare and development of the child.

Introduction to pre-school / Class rules drawn up in collaboration with children / Autumn leaves.

OCTOBER

Halloween safety - including pet and personal safety

NOVEMBER

Winter seasonal fruit and vegetables

DECEMBER

Christmas / snow / visiting relatives over holidays

JANUARY

New life and insects

FEBRUARY

Nature planting and Valentines Day

MARCH

Irish and international culture - St Patrick's Day / Mothers Day

APRIL

Easter / forest animals

Safety - farm / beach / water

Holidays / travel / modes of transport

9.10 - 9.20

Arrival, personal greetings, children signed in by parent / guardian

9.20 - 9.30

Circle time

9.30 - 10.15

Children select from activities set up in the room, focusing on pre-maths and science areas

10.15 - 10.30

Toilet and hand washing followed by snack time, children develop independence and self esteem as they serve themselves and pour their own drinks

10.30 - 11.00

Art and sensory exploration through the emdium of making and using play-doh

11.00 - 11.30

Outdoor play - motor and social skills development

11.30 - 12.00

Group time (games / songs / rhymes) and stories using various props, small group / table time using sort boxes, blocks construction etc...

12.00 - 12.15

Buntus - physical activities to a programme provided by the sports council of Ireland
